Aquí Estamos de Pie - Supporting Immigrant Families
“Aquí estamos de pie donde pertenecemos.”
We are here standing strong in our rightful place.
Recent federal executive orders have targeted immigrant families all over the nation, leading to real feelings of uncertainty and fear that permeate schools, homes, and places of work and worship. For every student, educator, staff member, parent, and family in DPS and beyond, we see you, hear you, and feel you.
At Durham Public Schools Foundation, we stand alongside immigrant families and support their active resistance against targeted attacks and fear-mongering tactics. Resistance includes our right to joy — a reclamation of the happiness and self-expression that we all deserve, in spite of attempts to take it away.
We are taking action in several ways, including our recent public statement, advocacy with district leadership, and our ongoing work developing immigrant family leadership through our Sembrando Raices program.
Today we are proud to showcase the artwork of Roan Boucher and other local artists through our “Standing Strong/Estamos de Pie” community art campaign. Boucher is a Triangle-based creative, committed to making art for movements and communities. His work featured here draws inspiration from the immigrant leaders of Sembrando Raices, who developed the campaign slogan “Aquí Estamos de Pie / Donde Pertenecemos.” The slogan highlights the deep-rooted connections immigrant families have with each other and the land they reside on. Even in times of chaos, the cacti symbolize our collective strength and potential to thrive. In the same breath, Aztec culture associates the hummingbird with the sun god, Huitzilopochtli, who guided them on their ancient migratory journey. The rising sun portrays hope we find in the hardest moments, when we lift our eyes to it. Working hand-in-hand, these symbols are true markers of the resilience and strength of immigrants in Durham Public Schools, and beyond.
Never forgetting to center our work in love, joy, and rest, DPS Foundation is proud to uplift the work and craft of local artists and immigrant leaders, as together, we are stronger. Boucher’s “Aquí estamos de Pie” poster is now available for pick up at our offices. We have also compiled other information for schools and communities looking for ways to defend themselves from fear and intimidation. We encourage representatives from schools and PTAs to get in touch to request a packet.
His artwork is also now available for download and print for free in English and Spanish, alongside a growing collection of artwork from local artists and DPS educators and students. In the coming weeks, we will supply the Durham community with Boucher’s print in other languages spoken in Durham. We are also gauging community interest in printing stickers, magnets, and yard signs for this community-wide campaign. Please fill out this form if you’re interested.
We are grateful for your ongoing support, as we take action to support public education where everyone is welcome.
In community,
